About the Symposia

The founders of the Symposia, Professors Shoji Tanaka and Walter Kosonocky, first organized the VLSI Technology Symposium in 1981 to provide an opportunity for world’s top technologists to engage in an open exchange of ideas on what was quickly becoming a revolution in the world’s industrial capability. Since then, the Symposium has been held annually and has developed into an important and valuable event for people working in the VLSI industry. The presentation of high-quality technical papers has enabled attendees to learn about new directions in the development of VLSI technology. The Symposium’s collegial atmosphere has made this an enjoyable learning experience.

The Symposium on VLSI Technology has alternated each year between sites in the US and Japan. In 1987, the first Symposium on VLSI Circuits was held in conjunction with the VLSI Technology Symposium in recognition of the growing interest to provide the same intensely focused and open forum for discussing circuit and system implementations. During the past 30 years, this annual gathering has increased in value for all participants, with many new technologies and circuits introduced during past Symposia, which have contributed to the prosperity of the world. The Symposia sponsors continue to be the IEEE Electron Devices Society and Solid-State Circuits Society, and the Japan Society of Applied Physics in cooperation with the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

The two Symposia remained linked for many years to provide opportunities for technology engineers and scientists and circuit and system designers to interact with each other. These interactions are augmented with short courses, invited speakers and several evening panel sessions, including joint focus sessions integrating papers from both disciplines. In recognition of the efforts of organizers, authors, and participants in making the Symposia successful, an extensive entertainment and banquet program is included.

Now in its 44th year of delivering a unique convergence of technology and circuits for the microelectronics industry, the 2024 IEEE Symposium on VLSI Technology & Circuits will be held as a five-day in-person event onsite at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, HI from June 16-20, 2024. The Symposium will feature selected presentations and panel sessions as well as advanced VLSI technology developments, innovative circuit designs, and the applications they enable, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, wearable/implantable biomedical applications, big data, cloud / edge computing, virtual reality (VR) / augmented reality (AR), robotics, and autonomous vehicles.

Test of Time Award

Established in 2021, the Test of Time Award recognizes the most impactful Symposium papers from each track, published 10 years or more ago, that have established their significance in history.

Test of Time Award Honorees

Best Student Paper Award

Since 2004, the VLSI Symposium has presented a Best Student Paper Award to encourage the research of student projects which will lead the next generation.
